Nikolaj Staub is co-founder of the specialty coffee start-up, Café Tacuba, in Lucerne. In today’s interview he talks about the origins of the company and the economics of the coffee industry. Traditionally, a bag of coffee may sell for around USD200-300, yet end up producing tens of thousands of dollars in profit at the retail end of the value chain. Nikolaj and his partner Manolo wanted to change that through direct import from El Salvador; this ensures that the coffee farmers also participate in the retail-end margins.
Nik also talks about their two rounds of crowdfunding on wemakeit. At their location in Lucerne, customers can not only enjoy Tacuba’s specialty coffee but also oversee the roasting process. Their business was also covered in the local newspaper (article in German).
