Academic Word List (AWL)

Revising my personal notes from this year’s ICLHE conference at Maastricht University, I came across something I had picked up in a presentation  by Patrick Studer and Paul Kelly, two colleagues from Zurich University of Applied Sciences, School of Applied Linguistics.

In their presentation they mentioned the Academic Word List, a resource available to all their students. This list contains 570 word families which account for 10 % of the total words in a wide range of academic texts, but does not contain words occurring in the first 2,000 words of general English nor domain-specific technical or specialist words.
